I like most of their stuff, but I agree with the general consensus that the Gorgeous era was when they were making a lot of their most forgettable stuff in conjunction with all the really good tracks like Plan9 and Nimbus and things. Personally, I think Sexy Dancer and Sexy Synthesizer are profoundl...

Ah, thanks for the clarifier. Nice to be on the board, good to find people who are true 808 fans. I've only met a few in Chicago, and now that I'm a rural college in the middle of Iowa with 1300 people age 21 and under, I'm just about the only one. Ah well.

Peace. 8)

Responding to A Gillian S, yes indeed I'm from Chicago, but no I have never seen 808 perform live. :( Their last tour, I believe, was about the time I found out the existed ('98?). Someday...

Thermo Kings was tight, Ex:El and 90 are fantastic, Newbuild is a classic, but Don Solaris is my freakin' favorite album of all time by anybody, so I had to go with that, fellas.

Legion of Boom? Haven't heard much, but I heard the two tracks that featured the Limp Bizkit guitarist (Weapons of Mass Distortion, Broken Glass) and that was good enough for me to order it online. The tracks I heard are both pretty intense, with some aggressive guitars, catchy riffs and Prodigy tem...

I didn't know Spanish Marching qualified as a B-side. That's definitely a keeper. Does Let Yourself Go count?

Also, what discs are La Luz, Nbambi and Ski Family on? And how can I get them? Oh yeah, The Chisler, too... is that on the Bond single?

Dang. Poll closed and everything. This is what I get for joining this forum a year after everyone else did. Ah well. I go for Lemonsoul. I'm not sure it's my favorite but nobody voted for it and it's a wonderful little tune.

Roundbum Mary is my least favorite. It sounds like a throwaway Gorgeous-era club tune. I didn't like Boogieman at first but it grew on me. The rest of the album is tight.

The song that was supposed to be called Roundbum Mary, Suntower, is incidentally one of my favorites.

Don't really object to above list, tho I would probably put Azura and Ooops higher and Europa a bit lower. As a casual Stones fan, however, I do properly appreciate their cover of Gimme Shelter. The live version of that in the Sounds page is intense. And Brian Eno's mix of Lopez on Thermo Kings is s...

A couple of these may technically have come out in '04, but I'm at a college radio station here in the states so we get 'em early. No particular order here, but these were the best electronic/quasi-electronic releases that came my way in '03... Radiohead, of course Death in Vegas - Scorpio Rising El...

If you're down with the 808+Bjork sound, I believe Graham Massey helped write the backbeat for the song Army of Me on Bjork's album Post (can someone back me up here?), and he's given props on the liner notes of Debut too so he might have had a hand in that too...

Yeah, I agree with Markus mostly. Gorgeous is not the most even but it's more accessible, and the two cuts you named are very indicative of the album's sound in general. Plan9, Contrique, and One In Ten are also keepers. If you like ex:el, Gorgeous and the 90 UK release are the closest thing to it (...
