I think the release date slipped, although Timebomb - the lead single was released in August '92. One In Ten followed in December'92 and Plan 9 in January'93. That would mean three singles released before the album - which, although possible, sounds unlikely.
However, 808's popularity was on the wane by then, and I don't think Gorgeous would have been able to spend over three months outwith the top100 before finally entering it. Even though it only spent three weeks in the top100, it peaked at #17 - not a bad placing at a time when indie was starting to take-off and Kurt Kobain was God.

An after-thought:
How it may have faired had it been released on 02/11/92 is anyones guess. It would at least have kept the gap back to Ex:El down to about 18 months, instead of 2 years - and 808 may not have been forgotten as easily.

I think this conclusively puts an end to the discussion (one of the numerous press release sheets that I obtained this week - got most of them now)! :)
