"808:90" Demos on Web site...

Post by scipark »

I wasn't sure exactly where else to post or send this, so I figured, why not in the general discussion? Pardon if it belongs in some other subset...

I poke my head 'round the Site every now and again to check for news, and was beyond ecstatic to find the recent posts of "Cobra Bora" and "808080808" demos (the latter mislabelled as "Donkey Doctor", I might note). The working versions are not just fascinating listens, but more like a sort of teenage fan dream come true. I grew up obsessing over "Utd. State 90" and "ex:el", and many of my most treasured memories come from those albums.

Should anyone of any particular influence be reading this post, I'd like to request more of these demos. I've enjoyed all the miscellaneous demos that have made their way out, but this stuff really is amazing ... very much like the same thrill I got from hearing those old Art of Noise 1983 demos that were released via Internet only a few years back.

In short: Keep those fuzzy, warbling, half-produced old 4-track prototypes coming... It's amazing! :)

P.S.: A mythbuster question: Is it true that there was a "Techno Bell" demo from "ex:el" with the working title of "Taco Bell"?! And what was "The Streets of San Francisco" versus just plain old "San Francisco"?

First of all, welcome to the site, hope you find it useful. There really is a very nice 808 community going here, so if you have any questions to ask please feel free.

To reply to some of your questions and comments;

Markus (site admin), always tries to give us a track every month, but its more dependant on what Graham has dug up in the studio recently.

Donkey Doctor isn't actually a mislabel its an alternative name for a different version.

The 'Taco Bell' and 'The Streets of San Francisco' were working titles used on demo versions of EX:el and possibly on the promo copies.

Thanks, it's great to get your feedback skipark. It's important for Graham in order to judge if all the exclusive download tracks are really appreciated. As you may or may not have noticed, just yesterday I posted some news in the news section that december will feature many more mp3 tracks! Bootlegs and unreleased 808 material mainly from 2001. And I'll be starting to build the long-awaited radio show archive....
Thanks John for clearing up the track name issue, it's sometimes complex, especially when certain tracks have a working name and later the name is used for a different track on the finished album. Confused? I am. :-)

Good to hear some more recent tracks are to appear on the sounds page. Looking forward to it! I've missed my recent couple of months fix!!!

Graham / Markus, is some of the stuff not used for OT available or is it being kept for State to State 3?
