808 ZTT CD bonus re-issues: proposed tracklistings

Post by markus »

Update February 2008: ZTT have decided to re-issue Ninety, ex:el, Gorgeous and Don Solaris. That means no The North At Its Heights and Outpost Transmission. End of update.

ZTT Records are re-releasing their 808 State CD back-catalogue. Ninety, The North At Its Heights, ex:el, Gorgeous, Don Solaris and hopefully Outpost Transmission too! Every CD will be accompanied with a rarities bonus disc. All feasible proposals have been compiled into this topic. The actual discussions take place in the following topics:

Ninety re-issue bonus disc proposals.
The North At Its Heights re-issue bonus disc proposals.
Ex:El re-issue bonus disc proposals.
Gorgeous re-issue bonus disc proposals.
Don Solaris re-issue bonus disc proposals.
Outpost Transmission re-issue bonus disc proposals.

(Intermediate) Results:

The general feeling (with some exceptions) is that the tracklistings of CDs 1 should remain the same as the original UK issues. However there should be some added value, the most popular suggestion being 22 bit re-mastering. Merging tracks into eachother that weren't merged on the original albums or un-merging all tracks that were merged on the original albums was suggested by some, but not popular with most. Mixes on CDs 2 should also get a polish-up if possible, especially the demo tunes.

There should be a Box set for purchasers of all double CDs. This could be a sort of ZTT years Anthology. A bonus CD (State2State3) could be included with this box only. It could feature tracks that don't make it or don't fit (timewise or musically) onto the individual bonus discs. Could be a highly limited, numbered edition, e.g. only 100. Quite a box that would be, with 13 discs (6 x 2 + 1)!

Here are the proposed tracks:

Ninety
01 Magical Dream
02 Ancodia
03 Cobra Bora
04 Pacific 202
05 Donkey Doctor
06 808080808
07 Sunrise
08 The Fat Shadow (pointy head mix).

Bonus disc:
Essential:
Cobra Bora (Call the cops mix). Reason: Previously only available on vinyl.
Ancodia (Taters deep nit funky beat mix). Reason: Previously only available on vinyl and slightly longer running time than Ancodia Utd State 90 version.
Pacific 909. Reason: Previously only available in CD format on very rare US promo CD.
Other ideas:
Cobra Bora Shortcut (is a longer version of this available?) or live version.
Fat Shadow If there is a different mix of this (other than Pointy Head mix)?
Magical Dream (Demo version from website or other version if available).
If more than one version of Pacific is feasible:
Pacific 0101 remix edit. Reason: Previously only available in CD format on very rare US promo CD.
Pacific b (previously unavailable on CD, except on out-of-print Rave compilation).
Pacific video version This would be the version ending off Optical 90 (end titles).

Primary Rhyming
Nothing essential here (maybe one of the single releases):

OK, a big thanks to everyone who helped compile. I have updated this topic with the ideas about the remastering, the box set and of course all the tracks suggested. Also I've linked to all previous discussions I could find. Please take another look over it and all those discussions to make sure we haven't forgotten anything essential. Just added Variations on Te Deum.
This topic is now unlocked, so you can reply here, but please only if there is something essential that was forgotten. General discussions please in the topics of the albums.
Sorry about the ugly mark-up of the listings, but editing is a real stinker on this forum. If there are no more remarks, I look at this list as definitive. After that it's up to Graham & the boys and ZTT...

OK, since there were no more remarks, this is our pretty definite wish list then. Over to you Graham. Ian (Peel), take good care that ZTT get this right.

The list only compiles what we know about. It goes without saying that any unreleased / unheard of mixes / versions from the vaults would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks, and good night.

Will we ever be? I guess not. I'm sure not.

I have objected to vinyl/promo-only-track containers rather than best-of-the-era additions to the regular albums. But it looks good.

But I must say I still find the 4 Disco Disc/Forecast bonus tracks absolutely essential on a Gorgeous extra pack. But I guess I am the only one.

I look forward to releases. Although it will be an expensive one. Wonder if all will be in a box release?

I hope Im not too late in replying to this - I had limited Internet access and had to wait until now to write. Just a couple tracks and ideas missing off the already great list:

Personally I think that the following released tracks are essential and should be there for new listeners/reviewers and even us fans for an ultimate CD. (The greater the release hopefuly the greater the sales).

4:27 Ooops (mellow birds remix)
5:00 Cubik (Pan Am Mix)
5:45 Olympic (Euro Bass Mix)
4:41 Lift (Heavy Mix)
Variations on Te Deum (Eurovision Theme),

Unreleased/Released tracks in addition which I think should be included:

9:47 Bombadin Demo (only if one of the comercial releases is included- Fantastic journey of a mix).
In Yer Face Live Vigo version-full of energy. Could be placed on Don or OT Cd2
Fuzz Nasty/ Fuzz Nasty Live Vigo version - essential track, live version fantastic (Don or OT).
Macrobiotic - Edit or reworking - Great track but too long and drawn out(11:44) for the bonus disks. Would be great to have a lively reworked version.
4:43 Cubik:98/or Cubik 98 live -fantastic!
6:23 Pacific 303/or Pacific 303 live version (Gorgeous session or Belfast live)
Olympic - Good to have original Word mix (1990??) with Trumpets and the later 30 second one Ian peel mentioned.
5:13 Intro [106+State To State]/Cubik (live Tokyo radio Jun. 1993)

Other ideas or tracks not included:

Cobra Bora live 94 tribal
Nimbus (Granada?)/Lift Heavy live- apparently both tracks have been performed live and were great.
4:56 Olympic '93 (the word mix)
4:18 Fear
4:49 Lemon - Even if Gorgeous Bonus disc tracks are not included - Lemon perhaps should be.
7:00 Joyrider (a natural mix by 808 State) fantastic version but perhaps should be side lined for the rare sure is pure.
Freak beats state ritual-Included on 90s CD2 - too samey for Quadrastate but a good release.

Could Spanish Heart have a gap at the start at least so it can be recorded - as the begining is overlapped and cant be edited out without losing a huge chunk off the start.
4:18 Nbambi (the april showers mix) - is there a different mix?
4:52 Olympic State (Aug. 90) is listed but forgotten was 4:31 Olympic State (original version) which is the better mix?
4:05 Lambrusco (cowboy mix) this in theory could be released on the 90 disc if the Exel one is too chocka - because it was a 1990 release as with the above Olympic mixes. In addition doing this would be good as Lambrusco Cowboy mix is very similar to the Exel version and could be seen as being a bit samey for inclusion on the Exel disc - but its definately needs to be released.
80891 could be included on 90 due to the link witht the original even though it was released in the Exel Era.
Could name any different mix of the Fat shadow La Sombra Gordo mix after the Spanish tracklisting.
Any little skits would be great, eg like the style of 106 or fat shadow - although if never heard before may lead to a need to hear a full version!!
10x10 Black eye mix is Fantastic but only if the Promo versions of 10x10 arent being included because they are more important.
Could use the (S2S) greater version of Long Orange although the US one is good as well.
I personally would love to hear demo/early workings of/different versions of: Balboa, Spanish Heart and technobell if they exsist. Demo of Spanish heart would attract the ever loyal New Order Fans (eg 10x12"s!!)
4:20 Pacific 0101 (remix edit) - Is this any different to the Pacific 0101 mix or is it just a cut at the ends edit - if its the latter surely it isnt all that important because we could edit the 0101 mix our selves? (Could be included on the Album though).

I also think that the Bonus tracks on albums is the only way - it is a progression - and will allow for extra tracks - inheard material - fantastic!!!

I know the following idea isnt popular with everyone, but as it is difficult to fit all the essential tracks on the extra CDs of additional material - then perhaps the inclusion of bonuses on the album CDs:

Don Solaris and Outpost could have the same track listing as their Japanese releases. Although perhaps the US version of Quincy should be used if the 7inch UK version is used on CD2 as its much different.

Don Solaris (55.56)

Bonus Tracks (11.40):
5:50 Bonded
5:50 Chisler

(Still leaves over 6 minutes at the end for perhaps another track)

Outpost Transition 68:27

Bonus Track:
05:02 Quincy's Lunch Japanese bonus track (Or 04:48 US version)

808 State: Ninety (39:12):

3:52 Magical Dream
5:47 Ancodia (UK 90 mix)
6:36 Cobra Bora
5:41 Pacific 202
5:24 Donkey Doctor
4:20 80808080808
6:33 Sunrise
0:59 The Fat Shadow (Pointy head mix)

Utd 90 Tracks (20:16):
6:09 Boneyween
3:58 Kinky National
4:16 Revenge Of The Girlie Men
5:50 State To State (us90 mix)

Bonus tracks (14:12

9:52 Pacific 909
4:20 Pacific 0101 (remix edit)

Alt US Bonus Tracks (12:35):
6:49 Pacific 212
5:46 Pacific 718

Could also use Pacific 303 or Pacific B instead of the above. Having versions of Pacific on the Album Leaves CD2 without fifety thousand versions of Pacific!!
5:12 Ancodia (us90 mix) to be on the CD2.

808 State EX:EL (58:48):

4:56 San Francisco
3:51 Spanish Heart
4:01 Leo Leo
4:58 Qmart
4:49 Nephatiti
5:12 Lift
4:41 Ooops
4:20 Empire
4:54 In Yer Face (in yer face mix)
3:34 Cubik
4:05 Lambrusco Cowboy
4:55 Techno Bell
4:21 Olympic

Bonus Tracks:

5:08 Ski Family
4:53 Open Your Mind (Open mix) =10:01

(Could use 4:30 sound garden mix). Ski family and an original version of Open Your mind could be put on the album as a bonus as they fit in well with the album and would give valuable space on CD2. Hopefully the Fon mix of OYM will be on CD2 and therefore newbies and reviewers should be exposed to one of the released versions aswell.

808 State Gorgeous (56.50):

4:02 Plan 9
2:54 Moses
3:40 Contrique
3:33 10x10
2:40 One In Ten
4:16 Europa
4:01 Orbit
4:04 Black Morpheus
5:03 Southern Cross
4:34 Nimbus
4:45 Colony
2:55 Timebomb
3:23 Stormin Norman
3:00 Sexy Dancer
3:37 Sexy Synthesizer

Bonus Tracks:
4:43 Bombadin (original quica)
6:15 Marathon (original 2/4 pub mix)
5:25 Freak (dark disco mix)=16.23

Alt Bonus Tracks:
5:42 Bombadin (Barta mix)
4:54 Marathon (club 12" mix)
5:25 Freak (dark disco mix) =16:03

Would allow other version of Freak (6:40 Astroban mix) and The Mega fantastic Demo of Bombadinto be on CD2.

I know there will be a lot of fans cursing these ideas - but we are debating which tracks should and shouldnt go on CD2, and this would allow extra or essential tracks to be included on the CD2s. As long as the tracks are kept together at the end of each album with a gap in text and clearly labelled Bonus tracks then how can this harm the original release (and perhaps with a blank track of a couple seconds to distinguish between the original tracklist and the Bonuses).
The Re-release of the albums need to be comercially viable, and with extra great tracks on the albums as well as the CD2s they will be more attractive to the buyer - especially those who arent die hard fans and may already own or have copies of the albums. Other artists have released albums with a CD2 of additional material and bonuses on the original rereleased album and they look quite appealing. If fans are so bothered about having a mirror image album with tracklisting then why not find your originals and use them??
Personally I dont mind if the new album covers artwok is different to the old ones, if timelines (on the Bonuses) dont particularly match up or if new versions of tracks or new material is used on any of the CD2s. I do agree though if any Bonus Tracks are used on the albums then they should from a similar style and Era.

I do understand people wont agree with the above but it will mean extra tracks - Extra Material - whats the problem??!

In addition I was wondering does the Minton Mp3 Demo version vary enough to warrant its release? I havnt managed to track down the Gimme Shelter version yet - eventually I will. But the chance of eventually having two different Cd quality versions appeals to me (if they are different enough). On the sounds page it says almost identical- is it?

The same goes for Fahjita - I would love to own both the Wire release and the Demo in CD quality. But I would choose the Wire version for inclusion over the demo even though own it - As it majorly Rocks!!

It might be too late - but just got the New Massive attack double CD best of thingy. CD2 is a Dual layer CD/DVD. Regular CD one side flip it over and its DVD - in the great words of Paul Daniels "Now Thats Magic"!

Wouldnt that be great (or for near-future releases). Could have for example more tracks which would be great or videos. For example Vigo which seems to have been filmed the whole way through - Could be split onto 2 different CDs. Or rare performances on TV or the full version of Macrobiotic etc.

How long have dual cd/dvd discs been sold?

Personally, i would just love to see the vinyl-only stuff "iPod-ready". Thats the one thing that fascinates me.

Why put US90 tracks on the 90 bonus disc? US90 itself is easy to get hold of, "Kinky National" isnt exactly special enough to get bonus disc status, nor are any of the others.

In fact, my final opinion is that the original CD albums can be ignored, and ONLY release the bonus material (except the north at its heights, which i accept is rare now). Most of them have been released twice already (why was my 1999 purchase of Don Solaris a re-issue when it was only 3 years after the inception? Out of print and then back in again? strange).
The material is of no interest to anyone but hardcore 808 fans, so just make it available through the website or something, like Saint Etienne do. "808 State: Bonus Tracks - HMV £16.99" isnt likely to have an impact. Hahaha. Although website-only would run the risk of eBay sharking in the future....

QUADRASTATE should be released on its own CD, with enough bonuses to fill out the other 50 minutes. Back in the days of illegal KaZaA, i downloaded the whole thing, edited and mastered it myself - AND made nice cover art. So i have my own version....but a professional one is better still.

A double-disc set with all Pacific mixes would be nice too. Though after forking out to get the 909 mix on CD, it would be just slightly annoying :D

anyhow, i'm sure i'll buy whatever comes.....

oh and also, for Bombadin - obviously the Quica mix has LOWEST priority as it is already on an album ( 808:88:98 ). The single remixes would be nice to see.

This might lead to me selling my entire 12-inch high stack of 808 CD singles on eBay. Look out

And speaking of out-of-print stuff.....where can i get a CD copy of 4Hero's "Parallel Universe"? Allmusic.com claim it was "re-issued by Crammed discs" but i cant find it anywhere. As with Quadrastate, i relied on KaZaA for mine. Why it was ever out of print, i have no idea. its considered a classic.

Ah, but you can't actually get many of the 808 State albums (Newbuild, Prebuild, that's yer lot) in record shops at the moment...

Surely any idea to get 808 product onto the shelves has to be a good idea, no?

808

Post by SkiFamily91 »

It makes no difference, record shops are dead anyway. HMV are shrinking their dance section weekly, it halves in size every few months :D
They will not go out of business, but the sale of back-issue albums will make an ever decreasing slice of their profit pie. About two 808 albums a year are sold in there probably.

Amazon is the CD king and they have everything. Hooray for that.

Bizrrely, my Japanese "In Yer Face" CD single comes from HMV in Birmingham, about 6 years ago. It was NINETEEN f**king quid, in the ALBUMS section, but i bought it anyway. Facially Yours ambient finish, la la la......but anyhow, HMV will be lucky if I ever spend even 19p in there again. Unless they have the uber-sale of the century soon.

I just realised......why would ZTT be able to release Outpost? I have no idea why, but after Pacific 98, the bands releases are not on ZTT (did they jump/were they pushed?). Its not theirs to release, lol....

and speaking of ZTT - i just bought my first Art Of Noise album. How slow i am, this is nice stuff....:)

Outpost was released on Circus records, which no longer exists as a record company...
