Chris Paul Daniels: Northern Lights (Screening 2020)

16th – 31st October 2020

Grundy Art Gallery is pleased to be able to share Chris Paul Daniels’ film Northern Lights (2018) from 16 – 31 October 2020.

This screening of Northern Lights has been made possible with the kind support of the artist and is a celebration of light in Blackpool following the unfortunate postponement of this year’s Lightpool Festival.

The screening is a digital component of Grundy’s current exhibition THE LIGHTS currently on display in the gallery (until 19 December 2020).

NORTHERN LIGHTS CONTAINS SEQUENCES OF FLASHING LIGHTS WHICH MAY AFFECT VISITORS WHO ARE SUSCEPTIBLE TO PHOTOSENSITIVE EPILEPSY OR OTHER PHOTO-SENSITIVITIES.

An inquisitive voice from the far future, or ‘visitor from another place’, interrogates the traditions and artefacts of the Blackpool Illuminations, the annual light festival first established in 1879.

The disembodied voice seeks to understand, but often confuses, Northern English vernacular and traditions against the current shifting political dialogue surrounding Britain’s future. Known as a historic centre of working class seaside tourism, Blackpool’s unique fantastical fairground imagery can be universally identified as totemic remnants of a former era.

Daniels presents his own contemporary 16mm and super-8 film observations as a found archive, and a script littered with the same word-play commonly embedded in the landscape of seaside end-of-the-pier resorts; to try and decipher questions around England’s identity and the collective anxieties surrounding what the future holds.

Northern Lights was co-commissioned by Grundy Art Gallery and ICA as part of the Art and Screen Network. Originated from a residency at Lightworks – the Blackpool Illuminations Depot with Light Up the North Network (2017). In 2020 Northern Lights was acquired for the Grundy Art Gallery Collection. The acquisition of Northern Lights has been made possible through the Art Fund’s New Collecting Awards.
