Found an 808 Tape - Live in Sheffield 1991 (maybe)?

Post by blumarten »

I was going through a bunch of old tapes and found an 808 State bootleg I bought years ago.

The cover is this, which says Heaton Park in Manchester, 4th August 1991

But the recording is clearly from an event in Sheffield.
Anyone here able to correctly ID it?

Very grateful if so!

Not listened yet in full, but I'm guessing Sheffield University 28 Jun 1990 - as featured at https://www.808state.com/sounds/index.htm#gigs ?

interesting, thank you. it is indeed the same set, so that solves the mystery!
weirdly, the recording I have seems to be much better quality than the one you linked. Also, the one you linked is recorded slightly too slowly. If you listen to the speech right at the end of the recording (starting "MC Tunes and dancers...") you can hear it sounds pitched down and a bit slurry. A/B-ing it with the same section in my recording shows that very clearly.
I also compared track 3 (Tunes Splits the Atom). The version on my tape is perfectly in tune with the version on Spotify, whereas the recording above is pitched down and in a different key. The lower-pitched recording adds a few minutes to the overall length of that original recording as well.

I'm guessing the recording you linked was captured on a ropey tape deck (which is most of them these days). If it's useful to you to replace your archive version with my version please feel free to take it and use it!
