CURIOUS FREQUENCIES:
This film is a meditation on the call and response of listening, of the relationship between personal space and the collective experience of rave culture. It also serves as a historical record of the interior of the Granada Studios building, which is no longer extant, having since been redeveloped.
Abandoned and full of dated technology, the Transmission Suite is the former broadcast hub of Granada TV Studios in Manchester.Years after Granada TV relocated, electronic music pioneers 808 State set up their recording studio in the space to record the album ‘Transmission Suite’. This has great significance for the band as this building is where they made their first TV appearance 30 years previously.

Paul Banks’ YouTube Channel MCRSceneStories has quickly established itself as a vital and fascinating platform dedicated to documenting unheard stories from Manchester’s musical history. Having lived and danced through many of the great scenes of the last 40-odd years, Paul had first-hand knowledge that many of the prevailing narratives about Manchester’s music scene only tell a fraction of the real story, and his YouTube channel contains countless fascinating and untold testimonies.
Rainy Heart is excited to host Paul’s first ever live conversation with Graham Massey of 808 State talking specifically about the years 1988-1989.
