Which collaborations are more than a remix?

Graham, I was wondering which 808 tracks were real collaborations (is there a better word for this?). Maybe you could explain what differentiates them from remixes. I assume writing together with another artist, producing, or recording in the studio together?
Some examples which I'm wondering about, maybe you could correct or make additions?

- Jon Hassell
- Tom Jones
- Mansun
- Robert Owen
- Rolf Harris (I know Sunarise was remixed, but wasn't there a proper collaboration first, which remained unreleased?

Thanks. I'm wondering this for the possible inclusion on any of the ZTT bonus discs. And I guess full collaborations would not qualify for the remix CD project, if & when it happens...

i'd say GIMME SHELTER is a collaboration, i remember seeing Robert & Graham together in a studio on some tv programme - its the rac advert!

Even though a track can be considered a collaboration, and not merely a remix, my opinion is that they don't get mixed with the other 808 state bonus disc tracks...

My suggestion is a separate disc for those. A separate release.

Depends on how many there are I guess. But in my oppinion Gimme Shelter should go on the Gorgeous bonus, as it was played live with Robert during the Gorgeous tour.

Definitely agree with "Gimme Shelter", especially as it's only existence on CD is a couple of rare promos (although you can pick up a copy of the 5-track one up for 20 quid if you're feeling rich enough?).

Should Gimme Shelter be classified as a Collaboration or a Cover?
Surely if we're going to include the Stones track, then the brilliant Planet Rock mix should accompany the Gorgeous tracks.

Shelter: In my oppinion it's irrelevant if a collaboration is a cover or not.
Planet Rock: One of my faves too, but it's a remix.

Remixes = Planet Rock, Voiceprint & Sunarise, as there's original versions

Colloborations = Love Can't Turn Around (yes a cover butthere's only 1 version known by Tom Jones & 808)

same goes as Gimme Shelter (also a cover, but only 1 version recorded)

and Skin up pin Up (but not a cover, i'm sure)

Have to agree, a remix is something that changes the original version, a collaboration is working with another artist on a track.

I wouldn't personally opt to include any 808 remixes on the bonus CD's, however Gimme Shelter and Skin Up Pin Up are collaborations and could be included if available to add.

its all confusing for me too
Rolf I think we set up and paid for ,it would depend on what ztt has in paperwork (and that wopuld take till next century)(some recently discovered photoes have come into Walmsleys world ,will get them to you soon

Give me Shelter -think thats technicaly owed by the Shelter Charity,they paid for us to be in Manor Studios (virgin)for a weekend to do it-
It was a big thrill for me to record in there as its where a lot of my fave albums were done

Tom Jones Love canyt Turn Around must be owed by ZTT it was for his album on ztt(am i right?) It would depend on diplomacy with his management and Trevor Horn (Trevor Recorded the vocals to a rough backing by us then we worked on it--)

UB40 we own - we paid and there must have been some paperwork to that effect same with anything that apeared on our albums

I Can't Turn Around was written by Isaac Hayes (1975). Better known by House fans probably through it's version of Farley 'Jackmaster' Funk & Jesse Saunders - 'Love Can't Turn Around' featuring Darryl Pandy (1986). Tom Jones' version (produced by 808 State) was released on the Japanese version of 'The Lead And How To Swing It' (ZTT, 1994).
