808 State in the UK Singles Chart

Post by De Lillie »

Hi All

The new UK chart rules allow for the inclusion of EPs. Individual tracks can get separate chart placings based on DLs. The Extended pleasures of dance has never been issued on CD5.

Masters exist for the 12" and as you know the original bombed out at a lowly position 56. Get the EP reissued on CD5 and / or as a DL. Get 808State fans to mass buy (it's cheap enough). 1 500 DLs is enough for a top 40 placing. The singles chart is now expanded to 100 positions. I'm willing to by the two tracks at 99c / 79p each. Forgive me but i, too, have had enough of Cubik.

So what do you guys say? Can we make it work. Even self-financed labelless singles now make the UK charts. 30 000 DLs and you have a number 1 hit.

Cheers
Lionel

It's a big ask. I think it would be better to give Pacific a push. There are not many records which can claim a chart placing in three different decades.

It certainly would be hard, but if a story of the 808 State fan base trying to push a track into the charts broke out it would be pretty cool, I guess theoretically such an attempt would garner some attention if it was on a big enough scale. Oh, and Pacific at No. 1 in 2008 (August naturally) would be brilliant. :P

A reworking of 8080808 should be released, obviously to mark next years epic date. Simply releasing this on download next year should get the right publicity to create 808 overload.

I'm up for that.

Did anyone see the JMJ marketing ploy for Teo & Tea that rewarded fans for banner clicks? Fans (myself included) put the banners up everywhere (in forums, emails and web sites) and the fan with the highest number of points got to meet JMJ. Could we do something like that? A big ask, I know but it could help to get 808 back in the charts.

I like the idea of a re-worked 808080808 - that is a class tune and a very appropriate date is approaching in just over a year.

Let's do it.

Hi all

i agree with you all. JMJ is, of course, the King of Marketting. He shifts an uncommercial form of music by (1) creating an exclusive one copy album only but plays it on the radio (2) Hosts mega fire displays to promote just about any event: Bastille Day, Pope's Celebration, NASA, Shuttle blowing up, Opening of Lost City (South Africa).

And when he needs money, he revisits his backpages and issues 5.1 mixes. Come on guys. I like 808 State. I like EPs. Why I chose that EP is
(1) 808 State do not need to spend money on artwork, mastering, mixing
(2) Never been issued on vinyl
(3) Suddenly your original stock and promo copies [which i don't own] will appreciate in value
(4) EP releases lend itself to multiple chart placings
(5) Even sods in SA know Cubik
(6) I get to update my Charts Page

So guys, what do you say? Ancodia and Cobra Bora AAC and MP3s? Yummy isn't it?

I always thought 808080808 was an underrated tune, the chords are simply euphoric.

That said is Extended Pleasures of Dance a better candidate for a publicity drive? Multiple chart placings...we could have every 808 State single in the charts! :D

Hi All

Spoke to Graham. ZTT own the rights to back catalogue. 808 State are without label. Can't we get 808 to release a DL EP on the www.808state.com label? Simply Red and Marillion did it. Please guys, surely there are at least 1 500 808 Fans in the world. I know of 42 fans in South Africa. :P [And that's only those in my head]

Im sure everybody on here would download 808. As for the label, Spooky also released their material on their own label named after their website with downloads taking a priority.

Maybe 808 should release eight hundred and eight downloads on 8th Aug next year. I'm sure theres enough in the vaults. At least one must make the top 100.

I admire your enthusiasm, but you're on your own on this one. I struggle to find 20 people wanting a t-shirt, never mind 1500.

Ahh yes. But the t-shirts were twenty quid. A track would be 79p.

I totally agree Markus. I too bought a T Shirt. It's sad because even John Otway [now who the f ck is that] had a Top 10 UK hit just a year or two back with a 7" only release bought only by his fans. But then John didn't give away - free to his fans - over 50 DL only tracks. And of course two exclusive free albums. Imagine that John Otway outselling 808 State :(

Don't knock the Bunsen Burner it was organised by his fans as a present.
So it can be done, and especially now with downloads being counted for chart placing.

Surely the re-released albums will need some support. Remixes of Pacific from the likes of Fedde Le Grand, Mason, Mylo, Switch, Axwell, Freemasons (would obviously be interested) etc

wasn't knocking "Bunsen Burner" at all. After all i taught Physics and Chemistry all my life. Just meant to point out that we are better organised than Otway fans. We mass download stuff in any case.

Just last year Elton John entered the UK singles chart at #4 due to sms (text) purchases of Electricty, pretty much the same way you'd sms (text) off for a ringtone. This caused an outcry amongst non EJ fans as the purchase of the track in this way did not necessarily mean that you had to take delivery of the track. He (or his management) timed it well as Ghetto Gospel (with a co-credit to EJ) was at #1 at the same time.

And this year, a supposed blunder by the Arctic Monkeys (or management) allowed a number of album tracks to be littered in the lower rungs of the Hot 100. This "error" was corrected, but since then Fluourescent Adolescent has taken up residency in the Hot 100.

Acts know the music business. and with 25 extra chart positions you - or your fans - can make chart history. Sometimes you get caught. Chart hyping is merely a device to get a chart position so that (non fans) can buy what they see in the charts. It's come along since the Payola / Alan Freed schemes of the 1950s
