NME, (No More Eight08)

Post by SteveC »

A wopping Madchester annual has been released by NME, read a bit today in WHSmith and didn't see the phrase 808state mentioned once.

Weren't 808 the band that kickstarted this era........never mind

Yeah, and I believe 808 have probably been the most successful of the Madchester era bands, certainly the most interesting! And they are one of the few still around today! Shocking to omit them really.

Yup, they're only mentioned twice (once in a Happy Mondays interview) and the other as one of the Inspiral Carpet's favourite bands.

From the Monday's interview (page 44):

"Within hours, Shaun will puke over the legs of Graham from 808 State. He'll end the evening pissing on somebody's drawers.
Bladdered."

And that's it...

So, if you like the Happy Mondays and the Stone Roses (98% of the entire magazine), then buy it... If not, then it's not worth the paper it's printed on!

Madchester RIP

Post by Dr.Walsh »

Hi all,

The reason 808 weren't in the booklet was because (and I'm sure they would agree with me) is that they had very little to do with the 'Madchester' movement.

808 were always plenty steps beyond it, and in my opinion always distanced themselves from it as much as possible.

The NME has never had much of a grasp on dance music (of the 2 indie music papers Melody Maker always seemed to have much better coverage and knowledge and even then only a bit).

I bought the NME 'Madchester Rave On' booklet and I think it covers 'Madchester' very well, with good insight into the 4 main movers of the movement (Mondays, Roses, Carpets and Charlatans).

I feel sure 808 will be glad they are mentioned very little in the book. 808 never were 'Madchester' and will always be something a lot more than 'Madchester'.

I'm also sure everyone involved in the original 'Madchester' bands will go on to much better things.

I think the NME book draws a line under Madchester.

In my opinion it's 'Madchester RIP, let's move on to the next one'.

Peacechester dance on!

808 State did not play the Hacienda at all.

NME think that Madchester centers around guitar bands which is not entirely true.

Darren and Andy have always said that accounts of that period are mostly false-so 808 should write a book about it.

One book I do suggest about that period is 'Once in a lifetime' by Jane Bussmann-plenty of Andy quotes in that about the Madchester scene.
