Hands up...

Post by Softlad »

Not been on this site for a few years, and firstly, can I just say that this is a quality site for me to read about everyone elses experiences of 808 - and the passion that is still around for this influention band, especially after over 15 years recording, producing and re-mixing.

Anyway, as I said I've not been on the website for a few years, and therefore had to register some details so that I could post some new topics.

The first thing that really surprised me was that over 300 people have registered on this website, and are therefore hopefully keen 808ists.

Therefore seeing as the Hit Sqaud MCR only released 500 copies of their debut 12" Wax on the Melt, who else, apart from me, owns a copy of this?

It would be interesting to find out who has this record...

Welcome back Softlad. Sure, I've got two copies. Picked one up at vinyl exchange in manchester, and the other a guy was selling from the US (mint).

Yeah, I managed to pick up one of the copies for a tenner that guy was selling a couple of years back - took me ages to track down too!

Don't see many copies of it around these days, and I believe that someone is trying to sell one on Netsounds/GEMM for quite a bit of cash!!

Go to the newsarchive 1999, and then see the entry 26:09:99 Hit-Squad M/cr. I don't think the guy has got any left though.

That record is a funny and nice story for me. I phoned Vinyl Exchange more than 10 years ago. I read about the shop in DJ Magazine and thought, hmmm Manchester, second hand, maybe I should try it out. I just asked for some 808 older stuff, and the guy said he had a record they made before they called them self 808 and it was 8 quid. I thought, OK lets have it. I didn't know about it, which was the charm of record hunting in the pre-internet days. Of course I was stunned when the mailman gave it to me. It even has a remark telling the insane rating in Record Collector, so I found it great for more reasons.

That and all the Creed stuff I only knew the excistance of when I hold a copy in my hands. Those were the days.

Since then I've found 2 copies, so I'm ashamed to admit I have a total of 3 of this rarety.

So that's 8 copies in the hands of some real 808 fans...and some of you have bought it at a real steal of under a tenner!

I myself shelled out over £40 for it in 94, from a record fair in Liverpool but it was worth every penny to know that I had finally managed to get my hands on it. Although I did try and scam the seller by not letting on how much I knew it was valued at, but as 808 had been featured in Record Collector, he knew the value alright!!

What's the most anyone has paid for any 808 record??

Most expensive? Hmmm, now that's a difficult one!

Can't think of the most expensive 808 record (I even managed to grab the "Two Fat Ladies And A Duck" 12" for about a tenner), but I have spent a small fortune tracking down the remixes and side projects! :P

Off the top of my hand, the Melo Milo CD (with Graham's cover version of "Rydeen" cost me about fifty quid), and the Biting Tongues tape "Live It!" must have cost me near that too... And that Dr Who Remixed CD cost a small fortune too - wonder if the album will ever get released?

I'm still on the lookout for two ultimate gems - the Mohamed CD single of "Ham Safar" - only seen one copy of that, and the Shimmer CD single of "Take Arms" - again, only seen one copy of that...

Oh, and some of those cassette singles... Anyone ever seen a a '10x10' cassette single? Or managed to grab either the UK, US or Australian Pacific cassette singles?

Collecting 808 releases over the past 15+ years has been quite expensive!

Oh yeah, whilst we're on the subject, next month's Record Collector has a feature on 808 State (so it says in the current issue)!

If it can help in any way, I can add that it was (is) very suffy. When it came I was a bit dissapointed that I had paid that amount on such a crackling record. But it wasn't long before I relealised it didn't matter a bit. Quite classy in fact on such a homemade record.

It has a nice grafitti on the sleeve though.

In general, the most expensive one to get incl. all perifirals must be the Massey mix only Army Of Me whilte label. Due to the broad demand for Bjork stuff and the top rarety it is.

Anyone got that?

Yup, only 50 copies, but the mix can be found on the CD single, so I've never really bothered with it!

But, yeah, Bjork fans will pay a lot of money for it...

Same with that Dr Who sampler - there's a lot of Dr Who fans who'll pay silly money for it - I think I got outbid on eBay about 5 times until I finally grabbed one! :)
